Street Life: Summer Street Fairs

JUNE 16, 2009

There's no better place to meet your neighbors or pick up a pair of cheap sunglasses than a New York City street fair.

Some street fairs help raise money for community charities and causes, others are intended to raise awareness and funds for various organizations and programs. And some are meant just to bring people together to enjoy summer in the city. Some fine examples: The Classic Car Show in Dag Hammerskold Park, Washington Square Summer Fair, Harlem Week Festival and Heritage of Pride festival all take it to the streets once again this summer.

The Motion Picture Club's Day at the Movies Street Fair and Make Music New York celebrate the arts and are a great chance to catch some local talent.

The French Institute Bastille Day and the Dominican Day Parade are among the celebrations of community pride–and are a sure bet for better-than-usual street-eats. And, of course, mid-September's Feast of San Gennaro is the granddaddy of street fairs, officially signaling that summer's drawing to a close.

You can find a complete schedule of the summer's street fairs and festivals here (via www.about.com), but you'll know when one arrives on your block (and it's a good bet that one will) when the aroma of roasting hot dogs and the sounds of merrymaking hit your window.
