Thanksgiving Volunteering: Give More than Thanks

NOVEMBER 23, 2010

Thanksgiving is a good time to lend a hand—or a hot meal—to your city neighbors.

If you’re looking for a volunteer experience that’s neither kitchen duty nor food drive, this list at New York Magazine has you covered: Buy a pie, run a race, cut a rug and more while giving your time to many who will appreciate it.

Feeding NYC
FeedingNYC relies on the generosity of New Yorkers to help provide Thanksgiving dinners to thousands of families in need. Their goal this year is to provide 8,000 families with food with the help of individual volunteers and corporate sponsors.

Citymeals-on-Wheels
Citymeals-on-Wheels volunteers hand-deliver meals, make social visits, or answer letters for elderly residents who find themselves alone and in need. In addition to serving a hot meal and some company, you can send some encouragement: Write a note to one of their Thanksgiving meal recipients here.

Bowery Mission
This local organization has been helping rebuild lives since 1879. In addition to the popular kitchen detail, you can donate food, money, or items for “Blessing Bags” that will be distributed to Thanksgiving guests.

God’s Love We Deliver
This organization has a long history of providing meals for folks who can’t cook or shop for themeselves. They’re looking for drivers to deliver Thanksgiving baskets, sponsors for runners in the Race to Deliver, and more.

Bideawee Donate a Meal
Help the littlest city dwellers by donating a meal to feed a homeless pet.
