The Conran Shop Moves Downtown

MAY 21, 2010

No longer a hike and a half to the far east side, shopping at Conran’s is easy as ABC.

The Conran Shop, purveyors of sleek contemporary furniture, kitchenware and modern design classics, has relocated from its seemed-like-a-good-idea-at-the-time location in the 59th Street Bridge to much more accessible new digs on the lower level of venerable Chelsea home decor emporium ABC Carpet and Home. The store made the big move in April, but a grand re-opening party was timed to coincide with the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) happening at Javits Center and the arrival of the international design crowd the show brings to town. Sir Terence Conran himself was on hand to toast the loft-like new 9,000 square foot space, which will continue to provide shoppers with their fix of Eames, Kartell, Bodum and Alessi as well as lesser luminaries and novel newcomers. The former Conran compound in the bridge plaza offered the also-seemed-like-a-good-idea-at-the-time Conran restaurant Guastavino’s, but visitors to the store’s new home won’t be at a loss for on-site dining: The newly-opened ABC Kitchen is chef Jean-George Vongerichten’s newest rising star and showcase for his signature regionally-grown, organically focused cuisine .
