The Free Store: Market Values, Priceless Goods

MARCH 20, 2009

The Free Store project welcomes a new kind of free market

The words "Free Store" might sound strange together in a city where shopping bags are almost a mandatory accessory. The Free Store project provides the shopping experience, but without the bit about having to part with your hard-earned cash. Artists Athena Robles and Anna Stein put the project together (it runs through March 22) with the idea that it could "reinforce and build connections based on trust and mutual exchange among the people of and visitors to Lower Manhattan. The project is designed to be a model of community and financial support that could also be used in other cities around the world."

When you stop by the store at 99 Nassau street in the Financial District, you can bring what you don't want: books, clothes, baby items, (donating is optional). Then, just browse and take home whatever you'd like. The Free Store has also been host to art exhibitions, performances and parties. The folks behind the project stress that the barter-based concept is better than eBay or Craigslist because of the added benefit of being out among the community while you swap your stuff.
