Tribeca Cool: Hudson Square Comes Alive

AUGUST 8, 2008

Leather, fur and fog: Rick Owens brings style to Hudson Square
You knew the early '90s were back, didn't you? Avant-garde designer Rick Owens has opened his boutique in the soon-to-be-newly-chic Hudson Square area where Tribeca meets Soho. The skilled and celebrated American fashion designer has been building his stylish renegade reputation since he began selling his own line in Paris in 2003. The clothes—both men's and women's—are dark (both in color and mood) and raw but sexy, in soft leather, shearling, and cashmere with angular zippers, sculptural mesh and faded military cloth molded into asymmetrical, architectural shapes. Best worn with pale ennui, but the moody shades of black and grey are right at home in any New York wardrobe.

The store itself is stripped-down but definitely not without personality, which clearly represents the dyed-black-locked designer's own style: There's a glass tank with swirling fog inside, and huge marble slabs from a sculptor in the neighborhood. Owens favored the location because it's a bit off the well-trodden shoppers' path, but shows all the signs of becoming a retail fashion hotspot.
