We love the nightlife: Santos Party House

JULY 11, 2008

Manhattan Nightlife is Dead. Long Live Manhattan Nightlife.
It's been a while since Manhattan (you know, that island west of Brooklyn?) got a big, bad, hot, cool nightclub where people seem to have actually gone home to change out of suit-things and into club gear. New downtown addition Santos Party House is just that, updated for the current scene of mashup DJs, skinny rockers (DFA Records' star James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) has already played here), electro-disco and viral internet promotion.

Months of secret shows and private parties, and the fact that hipster staple Andrew W.K. is behind the two-level, 8000 square foot venue got the buzz going to a fever pitch before the spot even opened in May. When Vice Records hosted a recent event here, they actually warned people NOT to show up, as there had been such a huge level of interest on nightlife web sites and RSVP lists had been filled. Not for crowd-haters or folks on a budget. Drinks are pricey, door-clipboards are very present and music is loud—though often good—and people are dancing. Manhattan nightlife is dead. Long live Manhattan nightlife. Upcoming events include Black Kids live, and a lineup of uber-DJs.
