Edit: Upper East Style
In the deeply residential Upper East Side neighborhood known as Carnegie Hill, busy Lexington Avenue near 90th Street offers the classic selection of Petco, Starbucks, gourmet delis and eyewear boutiques. Location dictates that these be interspersed with progressive pre-schools, sushi restaurants, and that venerable cultural anchor, the 92nd Street Y. Cross-streets are lined with elegant brick towers and stately pre-war townhouses. Above the Avenue, the glass-and-steel luxury residence-to-be known as Lucida grows by windowed floors, a sign of things to come.
Another sign is Edit, a jewel-box of a women’s clothing boutique that fills a slender, deco-curved black-and-white modern two-story storefront. The stunningly elegant space with chocolate-wood floors and sparkling-white walls has a decidedly uptown feel, but modern style prevails on the shop’s racks and tables.
Edit offers a carefully curated selection of designers more likely to be found in the Madison Avenue shopping corridor or downtown in Soho. Avant-Couture designers like Derek Lam, Sari Gueron and Vanessa Bruno, as well as favorites like Michael Kors and Anya Hindmarch are represented in bags, shoes, and delicate silk dresses and tops suited to the neighborhood yet infused with current style. Upstairs, you’ll find more casual—though no less covetable—items: nautical-striped tissue tees by Velvet, Boho-chic tunics from Ulla Johnson and Tree, and denim from Rag and Bone and J Brand—very Anthropologie-meets-Upper-East. You’ll also find handmade jewelry and a small-but-cute selection of girly gifts like gourmet Vosges chocolates, candles and tableware. Collections change often and stay current, and staff are helpful and sweet. Even sweeter: The dark chocolate bars embossed with the shop’s logo waiting for you to take on the way out.
