Mother’s Day at MoMA
On Sunday, May 8, MoMA hosts a special celebration of Mother’s Day. Start with a private breakfast reception overlooking the Sculpture Garden, followed by a guided group tour and a day together in the galleries.

LUCKYRICE Festival 2011
This annual week of festivities (last year’s sold-out launch attracted over 6,500 guests) celebrates Asian culinary culture through 8 auspicious events presented by some of the city’s best chefs and restaurateurs including a Grand Feast, Night Market, Opening Cocktails, Talk + Taste and other tastings, dinners and gastronomic gatherings.

Annual Sake Tasting at Japan Society
Over the past 13 years, sake expert John Gauntner has educated New Yorkers on sake, from the importance of water and rice to the bacteria that play a crucial part in sake-making. This year, Gautner talks about the most basic points of sake: “Hot or cold?”; the different types of sake; and how most to enjoy them.

Festival of Ideas for the New City
This is a major new collaborative initiative in New York involving scores of downtown organizations working together to harness the power of the creative community to imagine the future city and explore ideas that will shape it. With Rem Koolhaas kicking off the event and more than eighty independent projects and public events including an innovative StreetFest along the Bowery, local food celebrations, art events from the New Museum and Cooper Union, sustainable lifestyle discussions, neighborhood festivities and much, much more. Workshop: Basic Bicycle Mechanics
Become the envy of your less bicycle-able friends: Learn how to adjust, maintain, and fix almost every part of your bicycle. This course at Brooklyn arts and learning center 3d Ward will cover everything from patching an inner tube to adjusting limit screws on your derailleur. Also covered will be how to safely ride in traffic, different riding styles, different types of bicycles, and a little history to tie it all together.

Live music round-up
This week’s show highlights include a big-ticket MoMA Party in the Garden featuring Kanye West, experimental compositions by the Chiara Quartet w/ Matmos and the NOW Ensemble, sweet indie pop from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and an arty benefit honoring Phillip Glass and featuring music from JD Sampson (MEN/Le Tigre) at the afterparty.
