What's Going on this Week: Mother Earth
APRIL 20, 2011
Show your Mother (Earth) some love this week.
Earth Day is April 22nd
Though it’s a day of many corporate sponsors, this annual celebration of a different kind of Mother’s day is a good time to check in with the planet we call home. Visit the Earth Day New York site for a calendar of events like indoor and outdoor Earth Fairs at Grand Central Terminal, or volunteer and get involved. Parks, stores and restaurants are celebrating, too. Some cool ways to connect, respect, re-use and recycle:
Take the Cherry Blossom Walk at Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
Bring home a terrarium from The Slug and the Squirrel (via NYTimes).
Join an Earth Day Garden Walk at Wave Hill.
Unwind with Reforestation Cocktails at Candle 79—the uptown vegan oasis will plant a tree for each one sold.
Brookln Bridge Park Spring Fling
If an Easter egg hunt, egg toss, storytelling, bird watching and duck races don’t get you excited, prizes from Jacques Torres Chocolates might. This 6th annual springtime celebration is free and fun for the whole family.
Saturday, April 23, 10:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Brooklyn Bridge Park
American Design Club in the Open Studios at MAD
The American Design Club (AmDC) is a collective of New York’s leading young design talent. The AmDC will invite a group of their members to work in the museum’s open-to-the-public studios. On April 21, Founders of design blog Sight Unseen will moderate a discussion in the auditorium that will analyze the work created and displayed during this full-week period. The theme of this series is “Something to sit on,” and the discussion will involve the processes of American furniture designers.
Thursday, April 21, 7 p.m.
The Theater at Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), 2 Columbus Circle; tickets $12
Tribeca Film Festival
There’s plenty of hype around this Amex-sponsored film fest, but the stars do come out for city-wide screenings of an impressively vast crop of big-budget indie flicks with big names attached.
April 20- May 1, screening times and venues vary, check film guide for details and ticket info.
