Which Way to the Pumpkin Patch?

OCTOBER 21, 2008

Celebrate fall's bounty without having to hit the boondocks

Fall is in the air and you're staying in town, but between summer's end and Halloween you can catch autumn's bounty (and polish your pumpkin-carving skills) at these harvest events close to home.

The Central Park Pumpkin Festival features events for all ages including a scarecrow design competition, a Jack-o-Lantern Tower, and a Pumpkin Patch where you can pick out your own Great Pumpkin. Once you've bagged a big one you can launch it in New York’s largest pumpkin flotilla—the 18th annual Halloween Sail—on the Harlem Meer. A little further to the north, get lost in the only corn maze in New York City at the Queens County Farm Museum, where you'll also find pumpkin picking, apple picking, hay rides and more, all within reach of the MTA. If apples are your thing, (and you can get past the name), Outhouse Orchards in Westchester County is a short drive from the city and offers apple, pear, and peach picking as well as cider and homemade donuts when you're done. For more ways to get your harvest on, PickYourOwn.org is a good place to start.
