Why You Might Not Want a Doorman in Your NYC Apartment Building
APRIL 13, 2012
Not everyone sees a doorman as a 21st century necessity for a New York apartment. In newer buildings, a security service, a full-time concierge or a remote or “virtual doorman” system may take the place of a full-time doorman.
You might want to live in a non-doorman building if:
• You value your privacy. Maybe you don’t want someone knowing when you come and go and who visits and when.
• You’d rather not pay the premium. A doorman can add 10 to 15 percent to an apartment’s fees, and even more in small buildings.
• No doorman means one less (big) holiday tip to stress over.
• You’re not big on making small talk every time you enter or leave the building.
Two NYC condos without a doorman but with virtual services:
99 John Deco Lofts, at 99 John Street in the Financial District
and The Argyle at 251 7th Street in Park Slope.
