Window Dressing: The City's Best Holiday Windows

DECEMBER 10, 2010

The city's flagship department stores pull out all the stops for the season, turning their display windows into sparkling holiday fantasy worlds where characters from our collective cultural memory coexist in perfect harmony with equally sparkling merchandise.

This year's holiday windows run from traditional sugarplum fare to super-creative set design. Saks spins a curious little girl's dream world with a theme of bubbles and snowflakes. Bergdorf Goodman's meticulously constructed world travel fantasy is a little bit steampunk, a little bit Victorian. Bloomingdale's takes a cue from traditional blue holiday lights and adds the futuristic glow of 100 digital LED screens. Henri Bendel offers a stylish spin on the New York City Ballet's production of The Nutcracker.

Barney's window wizard Simon Doonan (via ThreadNY) is known for his quirky tableaus that cause sidewalk traffic jams in front of the Madison Avenue store. This year is no exception as the city's top chefs convene in effigy for a foodie feast (do not miss: an entire display made of shiny Illy coffee cans).

For lovers of classic Christmas window displays, Macy's stays trad with scenes from your favorite holiday movies (including, of course, Miracle on 34th Street), and Lord & Taylor features window ideas from shoppers and favorites from past years.
